Farmers Market Update

Our own downtown Pomona farmers market celebrated it's 2nd year of operation in October. The market has consistently enjoyed crowds of between 400-600 visitors a week. But lately between the rainy weather and the Holiday schedule, our Wednesday evening farmers market at 2nd & Garey has taken a hit. The market was closed this past Wednesday, due to rain. It will be closed Wednesday December 24th (Christmas Eve.) and Wednesday December 31 (New Year's Eve). It is scheduled to re-open Wednesday, January 7, 2009, weather permitting. So until then, all the vendors, farmers, and staff of the Wednesday farmers market wish you all a safe and happy Holiday Season!

The DPOA has been listening to your suggestions and has been busy this past year preparing for another farmers market in the downtown. Finally, the Department of Agriculture has certified us for a Saturday night farmers market to take place in Thomas Plaza on the 2nd and last Saturday's of each month. Like the Wednesday market, the new Saturday evening market will be open year round. The inaugural date is Saturday, January 10, 2009. There will be certified farmers, food vendors, crafters, and live entertainment. There will also be a car show on the last Saturday of each month. We hope to see many of you there!

A word of caution however regarding the Saturday market. We have secured the State of California permits, the County of Los Angeles permits, the Health Department permits, but we are still waiting for the City of Pomona Special Event Permit. Between the City Council elections and the Vehicle Parking District Commission's lack of a quorum, the item won't be heard by the VPD until Thursday, January 8, 2009. We are hopeful that their approval is forthcoming.

CITY OF POMONA HAS A NEW MAYOR

This afternoon at 2 PM (actually 2:25 P.M.) Councilman Stephen Atchley was sworn in as Councilman for Pomona's 6th District and Councilman Elliott Rothman was sworn is a Pomona's new Mayor.

There was standing room only in the council chambers with an overflow crowd in the vestibule and outside of council chambers. The Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts carried the colors into the chambers.

Mayor Elliott was given two standing ovations. One of them may have been for his comments "no meeting should last more than 30 minutes."

Norma Torres, now Assemblywoman Torres, made the trip to acknowledge Mayor Rothman and presented certificates to both Atchley and Rothman.

The front two rows of the council chamber were filled with family members of both Councilman Atchley and Mayor Rothman. Councilmembers Rodriguez and Carrizosa both pledged their support to the new mayor.

Afterwards punch and cake were served to guests.

Collector's Street Fair

A lot of excitement today on E. Second St.'s Antique Row in downtown Pomona. Two blocks of vendors selling antiques and collectbles at the Collector's Street Fair, an event that brings the crowds five times a year, and has been doing so for over 20 years. Antique Row is a great place to shop for that unusal gift, and with the Holidays just around the corner the shops along Antique Row are a must visit. You'll discover most anything you're looking for from furniture, clothing, jewelry, toys, to rare collectibles.

If you couldn't visit today, come down anytime, but especially on Saturday December 13 for Antique Row's Holiday Open House. After a day of fun shopping stick around for the Art Colony's 2nd Saturday Art Walk. There's a lot to see and do in downtown Pomona.

High above the street, atop the AMOCA building on Garey Ave. is a beautiful lighted sunburst, red, white and blue! Very Pretty. David Armstong, founder of AMOCA says there is a twin to this display which he will install atop the Armstrong Building.

The Downtown Pomona Owner's Association (DPOA) has been busy installing Holiday decorations in the downtown. Red bows can be seen on 2nd St. from Gibbs to Park, and along Garey Ave from 2nd St. to Mission Blavd. Holiday wreaths will soon be hanging from the Antique Row and Art Colony arches at 2nd. and Garey. Coming soon will be holiday banners along Garey Ave. from 2nd St. to Mission, and finally (if all goes well) a lighted display stretching across Garey Ave at 3rd. St. It's been many a year since any lighted displays have been seen on Garey Ave.

We know we're a little early getting these displays up, we just wanted to be the first on our block to get into the spirit.

Tray Chic Serving up FUN & FUNDS Event date: Saturday, November 22, 2008 Time: 6pm to 10pm Location: The dA Center for the Arts, 252 S Main St., Pomona Arts Colony, CA 91766 The dA Center for the Arts is known for creative fundraising. There were the metal chairs, the bowling balls, the skulls, and now artists have taken cafeteria trays and transformed them for the "Tray Chic" silent auction fundraiser. The event will take place this Saturday during the closing reception for the dA's current show, a remarkable art exhibit titled Popztlan. The dA has gained its reputation as a place where established contemporary artists such as Karl Benjamin and André Miripolsky, show alongside talented local and emerging artists. The Popztlan exhibit, featuring two paintings by Karl Benjamin, and a bridge that was once installed over the L.A. river, is truly a sensory adventure. A preview of early Tray Chic submissions, indicates a range of concepts that are “off the hook” so to speak. Notable artists such as Michael Woodcock, Dan Van Klapp, Fr. Bill Moore, and Dee Marcellus Cole are contributing trays, our beloved First Street Gallery volunteers are in the mix, and a few new artists will be making their en-tray into the downtown art scene. The dA has a strong artist base and the support for this event has been enthusiastic. Trays will be sold in an silent auction format, with proceeds going to support The dA’s mission. Bidding starts at 6pm, and closes at 8:45pm. Winning bidders can purchase and take their trays on the spot. Trays not sold during the silent auction will be available for purchase during the month of December. For extra fun while deciding which tray to bid on, there will be a wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, the dA Martini Club will be recruiting new members, and a jazz trio to embellish the evening. Fox Theater sign is BACK

Early today the newly beautified Fox sign was lifted back to her home. The sign will once again rotate and will be lit with red neon on one side and blue on the other.

Glass House Bar OPENS!

Well it finally happened. After a long and much anticipated wait the Glass House Bar opened last night and boy did the word get around. The service was great and so were the drinks. Many of the locals came out in support along with a steady crowd of new faces. Another great addition to the Metro.

Second Annual Chalkart Festival

The Second Annual Chalkart Festival was held in Thomas Plaza, downtown Pomona, this past Saturday. What a turnout! Hundreds of youngsters showed up to ply their art. Elementary, Middle School, High School, and even a few professional artists. Several local dignitaries came by and some helped out as well. Mayor Elect Rothman, Council member Rodriguez, Daily Bulletin's David Allen, The Goddess of Pomona and Mr. Big, just to name a few. City Manager Linda Lowry was seen serving hot dogs and sodas. It was a great day!

2008 Chalk Art Festival Saturday Nov. 8th

The City of Pomona and the Cultural Arts Commission proudly presents the 2008 Chalk Art Festival. Fun for the whole family and open to the public!!!!

Located in Thomas Plaza on W 2nd street. Chalking begins around 7:30am and the awards should be ending by 4:00pm. There will be cash prizes for multiple categories from students to professionals. You should be able to see all all the finished chalk designs later in the evening if you are coming to the Art Walk at starting at 6:00pm on into the evening.

We would like to invite you to join us for the first anniversary of Ink'd Chronicles on Saturday, November 8th from noon until midnight. We have organized Tattoos for the Cure – a day (and night) of music, art and charity.
There is no charge to attend however donations will gladly be accepted.

Our artists will be tattooing pink breast cancer awareness ribbons and other designs as requested. There is an $80 minimum and all of the proceeds going to the Breast Health Program at the Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Cancer Care Center . There will also be a tattoo-inspired art show with proceeds going to the cancer center.

In addition, there will be live musical performances beginning at 7:00 PM on the street stage in front of Ink'd Chronicles.

Some enterprising soul has erected a tent with a "For Rent" sign on it on the vacant lot slotted for the Watt Artisan project. As if the Watt Company didn't have enough concerns with the economy, now they may be faced with screening applications for a temporary tenant.

The Watt Co. has been wrestling with concepts to improve the appearance of the development lots until the time comes to begin construction. They are to present these options to the City Planning Commission at the November 12 meeting. But in the meantime the site has been transformed to accomodate an urban outdoorsy tenant?

Happy Birthday to dba256 Gallery Wine Bar! Yesterday marked the 1st
anniversary of the dba256 Wine Bar located at 256 S. Main St., right in the heart of Downtown Pomona.

And what a year it has been! From the get-go this establishment has been the hub of activity downtown. It's the place to go to meet and greet, view wonderful art pieces, raise a glass of your favorite wine or brew. It's been a favorite watering hole for locals and visitors alike. Many is the time people come to Downtown Pomona for one event or another, discovered the dba and returned time and again to enjoy the comraderie of the place. Last week a young couple announced their engagement there, and we've all seen local politicians and City staff there from time to time. It's the place to be!

Every Wednesday evening they feature a wine tasting which brings in the novice taster as well as the connoiseur. The place has taken on the role of our very own "Cheers", where everybody knows your name. After just one visit, you will be greeted by your name and make a connection to others. If you want to know what's "really" happening in town, check out the dba. The proprietor, Ron Faris, is a big supporter of all that is Pomona.

"Envisioning the Future" Oct. 4th

Come to the Envisioning the Future ceremony this SATURDAY, 3PM @ the Thomas Plaza.

After almost 5 years the beautiful mural that is so much a part of Downtown Pomona is finally finshed. With the dogged persistence of Cheryl Bookout, and the generous financial assistance provided by the Vehicle Parking District (VPD), the artists have finished the project and even given the mural a few coats of varnish to protect it for years to come.

All are invited. The Mayor as well as City Council members will be there to present the certificates and bronze plaque to all who participated in making the mural possible.

SCA Art Film Festival a Success!

The first annual SCA Art Film Festival was success. Last Saturday upwards of 100 people attended the free outdoor event in Thomas Plaza, right here in beautiful Downtown Pomona. The event was the brainchild of Bob Peece and had the backing of Cheryl Bookout of SCA and the DPOA. The weather cooperated too, a beautiful evening, perfect for this outdoor event. "Looks like this will be an annual event" said Bob...so we'll see you there next year!
