A Weekend in Downtown Pomona

Friday night's Fresh Air Flicks hosted the 1963 James Bond movie, From Russia With Love, starring Sean Connery. The Glass House hosted a group called "Casualties", strange looking hairdos and clothing, but apparently successful. The FOX hosted a sell out crowd for "Band of Horses". Saturday's "Potato Cook off" at the dba256 was a hit. The winner was A.S. Ashley, and his secret weapon Natalie, with a potato churizo mix that was really quit tasty. Second place went to Pam Henry who actually cooked the dish in her backyard (The Henry's were victims of a fire last month that destroyed their home.) Kudos to Pam Henry! A very tasty dish (the potato dish, that is). Saturday evening featured "Metro Night Out" in Downtown's Thomas Plaza. A great evening in spite of the heat. CBS2/KCAL9 set up a booth and gave out samples of Coldstone ice cream among other items. Over 1600 people attended the market and car show (almost 100 entries). We were all treated to authentic Aztec dancers in full regalia, a very impressive and inspiring show. Sunday afternoon Downtown Pomona experienced a first! Opera at the FOX Theatre. The Repertory Opera Company presented Donizetti's Elixir of Love. It was an absolute joy to see. It was truly a fun afternoon, the cast performed exceptionally with their acting and signing (singing) skills. Bravo!

So there you have it, just a typical weekend in Downtown Pomona, and did I mention all the fine dining and entertainment venues? If you haven't been to Downtown Pomona lately, you should really come for a visit...we would love to show you around!

August Second Saturday

Great Night, Great Fun, Great Town!

A whole lot of goings on were going on last night in beautiful downtown Pomona. A special appearance by L.A. Bluescasters at Thomas Plaza playing some cool, cool music, the Trojan Horse display, the Certified Farmers Market, the Second Saturday Art Walk. Wow! What a night. The place was jumpin! Speaking of jumpin, the dA Gallery for the Arts featured a "Gone Fishin" art show with something for everyone, including gold fish for the kids, pictures along side the "great" catch and, of course, some great art. But all 35 art galleries were alive with shows that brought crowds from all over Southern California . Good times.

FREE Summer Concert

Free Summer Concert with L.A. Bluescasters

Since 1968, the Los Angeles County Arts Commission has sponsored free concerts at community venues providing access to quality music programming for County residents. This year, LA County Arts Commission will sponsor special entertainment in Metro Pomona. The outdoor free concert featuring the L.A. Bluescasters will be held at the Thomas Plaza in downtown on August 8, 2009 from 6 PM to 9 PM. The L.A. Bluescasters, a rhythm and blues band from the San Gabriel Valley, was formed in the 1990's.

They have been described by reviewers alternately as “a band that knows what they were doing, one that could get me stomping my feet and slapping the table” who plays “some solid, old fashioned down and dirty blues.” Their music reflects each band member’s diverse influences of blues, rock, jazz and R&B. The L.A. Bluescasters have recorded two albums and have played numerous blues festivals, clubs and concert venues throughout the Southland, including House of Blues, the Glendale Blues Festival, B.B. King’s, the Troubador, the Baked Potato and soon in Downtown Pomona. This free concert event will also feature 25 vendors (food and arts/craft vendors at the Farmers Market) and coincide with the popular 2nd Saturday Artwalk. Come have a fun and fabulous time at Metro Pomona’s free concert on August 8th! For more information on L.A. Bluescasters go to their website: www.labluescasters.com.

THIS CONCERT IS SPONSORED BY LOS ANGELES COUNTY SUPERVISOR GLORIA MOLINA.

MY LITTLE CHICKADEE - July 17th

Bring your own chair to Thomas Plaza (W. 2nd & Thomas, Downtown Pomona) this Friday evening and enjoy a classic comedy starring Mae West and W.C. Fields. This movie was filmed in 1931 and it's a riot! Do you suppose it was shown at the Fox ?

CORRECTION! CORRECTION! CORRECTION! CORRECTION! CORRECTION!
An astute viewer of this blog (Mr. J.C.) has noticed an error in the release date of this movie. It was 1940, not 1931. It is still a riot!
A Mae West blogger posted the following:

Mae West: Getting Fresh Free
Pomona, California does not have a moviehouse but that does not stop the metro area from saluting MAE WEST and W.C. Fields, who will be getting freshly aired on July 17th. • • Annually, the stars come out in Pomona — — as part of their wonderful Fresh Air Flick Summer Schedule.• • Each Friday evening, fondly regarded motion pictures are screened for free al fresco style.• • Movie-lovers will enjoy "My Little Chickadee" next Friday evening on a funky inflatable outdoor screen set up downtown at Thomas Street Plaza.• • Bring a chair, pack some popcorn, and head over to Thomas Plaza in downtown Pomona at the junction of West 2nd Street and Thomas Street. After you enjoy this 1940 cinema classic, pick up a schedule to see what else will be screened through July and August. The final flicker will be "Cool Hand Luke" on 4 September 2009.• • The genesis of "My Little Chickadee" was jump-started at the end of May 1939. Mae West had returned to Hollywood after touring with her play about Catherine the Great and began negotiating with Universal Studios to co-star with another comedian. Aware of the former vaudevillian's reputation for drinking, Mae hesitated. Universal upped the game by offering her $300,000 for the film, the script, and a promise that anytime Fields was intoxicated, he would be banned from the set. The first time Fields drunkenly stumbled into the studio, Mae shouted, "Pour him out of here!" Very quickly, everybody knew she meant business.• • Come up and see Mae every day online: http://MaeWest.blogspot.com/________Source:http://maewest.blogspot.com/atom.xml

Chili Cook-Off Results!

The winner of the first annual chili cook-off at the dba256 wine bar and gallery is,....(drum roll here), Dano! Along with a trophy comes bragging rights for the next year! Congratulations Dano!

This year's cook-off judges were David Allen and Larry Egan. The judges tasted and re-tasted the entries.., all entries were worthy of an award ! The tasting was blind, the judges had no idea who's chili they were tasting. A big thank you to David for taking time out of his day to participate.

There were two other winners as well; Second place went to Colin, coincidentally co-owner of the dba256, and the People's Choice award went to Tibbi, Pomona's beer guru. Apparently the gang at dba256 really know their chili.

There were several entries, all of them winners!

Farmers Market Update

Our own downtown Pomona farmers market celebrated it's 2nd year of operation in October. The market has consistently enjoyed crowds of between 400-600 visitors a week. But lately between the rainy weather and the Holiday schedule, our Wednesday evening farmers market at 2nd & Garey has taken a hit. The market was closed this past Wednesday, due to rain. It will be closed Wednesday December 24th (Christmas Eve.) and Wednesday December 31 (New Year's Eve). It is scheduled to re-open Wednesday, January 7, 2009, weather permitting. So until then, all the vendors, farmers, and staff of the Wednesday farmers market wish you all a safe and happy Holiday Season!

The DPOA has been listening to your suggestions and has been busy this past year preparing for another farmers market in the downtown. Finally, the Department of Agriculture has certified us for a Saturday night farmers market to take place in Thomas Plaza on the 2nd and last Saturday's of each month. Like the Wednesday market, the new Saturday evening market will be open year round. The inaugural date is Saturday, January 10, 2009. There will be certified farmers, food vendors, crafters, and live entertainment. There will also be a car show on the last Saturday of each month. We hope to see many of you there!

A word of caution however regarding the Saturday market. We have secured the State of California permits, the County of Los Angeles permits, the Health Department permits, but we are still waiting for the City of Pomona Special Event Permit. Between the City Council elections and the Vehicle Parking District Commission's lack of a quorum, the item won't be heard by the VPD until Thursday, January 8, 2009. We are hopeful that their approval is forthcoming.

Saturday fun at the dA

Tray Chic Serving up FUN & FUNDS Event date: Saturday, November 22, 2008 Time: 6pm to 10pm Location: The dA Center for the Arts, 252 S Main St., Pomona Arts Colony, CA 91766 The dA Center for the Arts is known for creative fundraising. There were the metal chairs, the bowling balls, the skulls, and now artists have taken cafeteria trays and transformed them for the "Tray Chic" silent auction fundraiser. The event will take place this Saturday during the closing reception for the dA's current show, a remarkable art exhibit titled Popztlan. The dA has gained its reputation as a place where established contemporary artists such as Karl Benjamin and André Miripolsky, show alongside talented local and emerging artists. The Popztlan exhibit, featuring two paintings by Karl Benjamin, and a bridge that was once installed over the L.A. river, is truly a sensory adventure. A preview of early Tray Chic submissions, indicates a range of concepts that are “off the hook” so to speak. Notable artists such as Michael Woodcock, Dan Van Klapp, Fr. Bill Moore, and Dee Marcellus Cole are contributing trays, our beloved First Street Gallery volunteers are in the mix, and a few new artists will be making their en-tray into the downtown art scene. The dA has a strong artist base and the support for this event has been enthusiastic. Trays will be sold in an silent auction format, with proceeds going to support The dA’s mission. Bidding starts at 6pm, and closes at 8:45pm. Winning bidders can purchase and take their trays on the spot. Trays not sold during the silent auction will be available for purchase during the month of December. For extra fun while deciding which tray to bid on, there will be a wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres, the dA Martini Club will be recruiting new members, and a jazz trio to embellish the evening. WATT UP?

Some enterprising soul has erected a tent with a "For Rent" sign on it on the vacant lot slotted for the Watt Artisan project. As if the Watt Company didn't have enough concerns with the economy, now they may be faced with screening applications for a temporary tenant.
The Watt Co. has been wrestling with concepts to improve the appearance of the development lots until the time comes to begin construction. They are to present these options to the City Planning Commission at the November 12 meeting. But in the meantime the site has been transformed to accomodate an urban outdoorsy tenant?
