Apparently Pomonans need no such recharging of batteries. Monday saw a lengthy City Council meeting in which topics and debates included serious budget matters to open container drinking ordinances (item was continued for more study). This was followed by the Planning Commission Wednesday evening which also ran long debating such heavy issues as Sakuri Ichi's request to extend operating hours from 10:30 PM to 2:00 AM Friday and Saturday nights (item was continued for more study). Also on Wednesday evening the Farmers Market saw a crowd of over 400. Moving on to Thursday evening the Downtown Pomona Owner's Association (DPOA) held its monthly board meeting with discussions centering on budget items, antique lamp posts, downtown security, the Fox opening and Amoca's founders event. Also, the Glass House had a sold out crowd with lines stretching around the block. This brings us to Friday and the openeing of Smogdance. The red carpet was rolled out once again and the balcony of the Fox was full (those are the soft seats). A crowd of 150-200 attended opening night and bids were running high on the silent auction items. The Big Time Gathering, or Pow Wow, kicked off for the weekend in Antique Row's north parking lot. The event was packed with what appeared to be over 1000 participants and vistors. Saturday brought the First Annual Mac and Chesse Cookoff at the dba256 with judges David Allen, Natalie Rojas, and Larry Egan. There were nine fantastic entries, but alas only one winner. The winner was Cherie Savoie of Savoie's hair salon. Some entries were downright creative using ingredients such as lobster, bacon, tomatoes, black olives, and of course all kinds of chesse. Last Saturday Art Walk kicked in along with Metro Night Out, featuring a street fair and farmers market and a fantastic Pirate band performing at Thomas Plaza. Smogdance opened for its 2nd night with an all new movie list. The Pow Wow continued with even larger crowds, and the Glass House was busy with an event. Downtown was alive with all sorts of people enjoying themselves. Restuarants and watering holes were busy as well. A quick check with the police told us that all was peacful in the downtown. Folks, this is exactly the kind of downtown that city officials, merchants, and property owners have been working so hard to build. It would appear that Downtown Pomona has arrived! (again). There is more happening on Sunday (today). The wind-down of the Pow Wow, the final night of Smogdance and the conclusion of the silent auction at the Fox. Next week, more excitiment. The state of the city address, farmers market, and the hustle and bustle of taking down all the art shows and installing new shows for the next 2nd Saturday Art Walk. So, if you haven't visited downtown Pomona in a while, come on down. We'd love to show you around! Labels: art walk, City News, farmers market, Metro Night Out Sunday, February 15, 2009Images from the Valentines Art WalkLast night's Valentine's Day Art Walk and Farmers Market drew large crowds. The Glass House also had a sold out show. All toll some 3500 people visited the various events and venues. The Farmers Market counted 1,150 visitors, a record. A good time was had by all! The next Art Walk will be held Saturday, February 28Th along with Metro Night Out, a Farmers Market and car show. It promises to be another fun evening in Downtown Pomona. Mark your calendar, come visit us...we'd love to show you around. Labels: art walk, farmers market Sunday, February 1, 2009Metro Night Out (and day too)At 4PM the Farmers Market set up on W. 2nd St., followed by a car show and live entertainment at 5PM (50's Rock N Roll). An estimated 500 people came for the market, had a good time (we hope) and stayed for the car show which featured over 50 cars. At 6PM the Last Saturday Art Walk began and many of the car show and farmers market crowd strolled throughout the downtown enjoying the galleries and restaurants. The dA Gallery's own Red Cup Society (a secret organization) took visitors on a tour of the downtown art galleries. Later, the night spots were hopping with live bands and dancing. It was a safe, fun night for everyone. If you missed it, we'll do it again on February 14, and February 28. Hope to see you all in the downtown for Metro Night Out. As we always say, "Come to downtown Pomona, we'd love to show you around" Labels: art walk, event, farmers market, Metro Night Out Monday, January 26, 2009Metro Night OutThis Saturday, January 31 is an excellent night to visit Downtown Pomona! Labels: art walk, farmers market Saturday Night Farmers' Market![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last night marked the inaugural of the Second and Last Saturday Farmers' Market at Thomas Plaza, in the heart of Pomona's Art Colony, sponsored by the DPOA (Downtown Pomona Owner's Association). With little fanfare or marketing, the event was a success! Over 700 people attended the family friendly event featuring organic and certified farmers. Crafters, food vendors and Downtown merchants took part as well. Many of the vendors and farmers from the Wednesday night market participated. The market offered live entertainment, this night featured American Jazz. Just the right mood for the evening. Several local "dignitaries" visited...among them were Cathy, Jerry, and Victor Tessier. David Allen from the Daily Bulletin (oh, by the way David will be a chili cook-off judge this coming Saturday at the dba256). Also seen at the market were Council members Rodriguez, Atchley, Saunders, Lantz, and somebody told me Danielle Soto was there. Good thing they all showed up separately, we don't want any violations of the Brown Act. The DPOA would like to thank everyone who came. We hope you had a good time and will come again. The next Saturday night market will be January 31, 5PM to 9PM. We'll have live music, this time from the 50's and 60's (not the performers, just the music), and a car show. So come on out, support the Downtown, and have some fun connecting with friends, family and neighbors. Labels: farmers market Monday, December 22, 2008Farmers Market Update![]() Our own downtown Pomona farmers market celebrated it's 2nd year of operation in October. The market has consistently enjoyed crowds of between 400-600 visitors a week. But lately between the rainy weather and the Holiday schedule, our Wednesday evening farmers market at 2nd & Garey has taken a hit. The market was closed this past Wednesday, due to rain. It will be closed Wednesday December 24th (Christmas Eve.) and Wednesday December 31 (New Year's Eve). It is scheduled to re-open Wednesday, January 7, 2009, weather permitting. So until then, all the vendors, farmers, and staff of the Wednesday farmers market wish you all a safe and happy Holiday Season! The DPOA has been listening to your suggestions and has been busy this past year preparing for another farmers market in the downtown. Finally, the Department of Agriculture has certified us for a Saturday night farmers market to take place in Thomas Plaza on the 2nd and last Saturday's of each month. Like the Wednesday market, the new Saturday evening market will be open year round. The inaugural date is Saturday, January 10, 2009. There will be certified farmers, food vendors, crafters, and live entertainment. There will also be a car show on the last Saturday of each month. We hope to see many of you there! A word of caution however regarding the Saturday market. We have secured the State of California permits, the County of Los Angeles permits, the Health Department permits, but we are still waiting for the City of Pomona Special Event Permit. Between the City Council elections and the Vehicle Parking District Commission's lack of a quorum, the item won't be heard by the VPD until Thursday, January 8, 2009. We are hopeful that their approval is forthcoming.
